GET TO KNOW CANNERS ROW

THE MEANING BEHIND “CANNERS”

Our name Canner’s Row came from the long time history of Baltimore being the home of canning foods, especially oysters. By the 1820s, Baltimore became the first city to can oysters with the Chesapeake Bay soon being referred to as an “immense protein factory”. Around the mid 1880s, Maryland employed 20 percent of fishery workers in the entire U.S. Canning of all kinds rapidly developed in Baltimore from the 1800s through the mid 1950s until canneries moved their operations to other parts of the country and the world.
